Pizza
Submitted by Tim Davin on June 25, 2008 - 3:50pm.
I am fairly new to the area. What do you all consider to be the best place to get pizza? I'm not just talking about in Oakmont/Verona. I'm not thrilled with the pizza I have tried so far.
Cheers,
Tim

I think that one of the best pizza places around her is Dela Sela's (I think that's how it's spelled) on Verona Road. It's small, and I don't think they deliver, but it's good pizza with good toppings. And if you're ambitious or picky, you can order it "half-baked" and finish cooking it at your house to your specifications. (Beware the hot sausage topping--HOT.)
Gino's in Harmarville is pretty good. They have later hours than a lot of the other places too. They'll deliver to Oakmont (not sure about Verona).
Vincent's pizza in Penn Hills is good (though I've never actually had that location's pizza--I've only been to the one on 286). If you like *huge* pieces of pizza that you probably have to dab off (grease) then Vincent's is for you. That being said, it *is* good pizza.
And I hate to say it, but Rivertown Inn is good. Just DON'T PAY WITH A CREDIT/DEBIT CARD. I've been "burned" by them twice, went through the run-around trying to get my money back (they overcharged me) and finally gave up. But it's good food.
Really far away: Milano's on Route 8 in Gibsonia. That's where we go when we feel like something different.
Also, I've always like What's Cookin' at Casey's pizza, though they no longer deliver. Somma's on 909 is all right, as well, but I don't think they deliver either.
Really close, but something you've probably missed: Veltre's in Oakmont. I got sick of the pizza, so I ordered the lasagna, and it was soo good. It filled the entire foil container and I can eat it for 2 meals. (Which makes its price easier.) In fact, I like theirs better than Olive Garden's. I know it's not pizza, but I thought I might mention it. (Pizza eventually does get old.)
Other non-pizza places we've gone to when sick of pizza are Pasqualino's in Penn Hills (up from Arby's) for really good spaghetti and rolls, and Rosie's Pierogies in the Mills (the plaza by Steak n' Shake) for awesome pierogies and haluski. (Just thought I'd throw those out there.)
These are, of course, my own personal preferences. No warranties are made. Good luck. :-)
One of my favorites not mentioned yet is Pasquale's which has a few locations in the area http://www.pasqualespizzeria.com/
I've got to try Dela Sela's. Not had it yet, but I think I've heard from others that it is good Pizza.
I also like Fortino's now and then.
About Vincent's, dab OFF the grease? how about dip your crust into the grease. Yum, Vinnie Pie.
Vielle and Lazerace. I'm going to give them all a try. The vincents suggestion sounds great. I'll start there.
Cheers!
della sala's is ok. i know a lot of people swear by it. they only sell pizza and you can order by the slice which is really nice. if you're a cheese lover, get anything at pasqualino's. they have super thick pizza and it's always LOADED with cheese. their stuffed shells are amazing, as well as the sauce and rolls! YUM!! i order there at least once a week. i love vincent's, it's greasy, dirty, good artery clogging pizza. i also really like veltre's. go in and they have individual slices they'll heat up for you. people love mineo's, i haven't had it in awhile so i couldn't give you my current opinion. i love pizza, i'll eat it anywhere!! good luck finding your dream slice!
All of the recomondations so far are right on the mark. Having grown up here I have eaten at all of them. In the recent weeks there has been a new addition. Carnivores in the plaza with Subway has redone thier kitchen and menu. The pizza is great as well as the other new additions. The best part is they sell it by the slice as well as a whole pie.
Welcome to the Burg Tim. Don't live in Oakmont and Verona anymore, but they are great little towns. Where are you coming from? Vincent's Pizza is my favorite. I recommend the Ardmore Blvd location. That's the original.
Cheers Jack Trebac. I moved here recently from New Zealand. Happy to be in the Pittsburgh area - seems like a great place to live. Went to Vincent's a couple of nights ago and boy are all of you correct - it was the best pizza pie I have ever had. I plan on trying all of the other suggestions. I have a feeling that I may be disappointed because Vincent's seems hard to beat. BR
Well, I tried Della Salas and didn't much care for it. I didn't think the dough had much taste to it, it's just a bit crunchy if you like that, I do not. The sauce was pretty bland and just enough to wet the top of the pizza. We got a large pepperoni mushroom. I'd much rather have any of the others mentioned.
Something else that may be interesting. The Fox's in Oakmont is now closed. Now, I really like there pizza, but the Fox's in New Kensington I think is terrible. I Haven't tried any of the other Fox's, but from what I understand some Fox's use fresh dough and some use frozen it depends on the type of ovens they have.
Another interesting thing is Franco's pizza, don't much care for it, but I've had a Stromboli from Franco's and liked it, I don't get it. Also, we are pretty addicted to Franco's fried chicken.
Anybody here had Tierno's?
I did hear rumors that most of Fox's pizza dough/shells come from Tomanetti's. (I believe it was all but the "big daddy".)
Apparently, a lot of places get their shells from Tomanetti's, but who gets them is a pretty well-kept secret. Nobody would want to admit that such an important pizza component is not of their own creation.
Ooo, pizza conspiracy!
Well, for my $, the best pizza in the tri-state area is Police Station Pizza In Ambridge!!!(AKA 14th Street PIzza, where they first opened many years ago...)Haven't had any recently since my parents died.
I do like Fortino's pizza and prices, or I like to make my own from scratch, using a bread machine to make the dough...
My pizza peeve, though, is to ask for mushrooms on the pizza, and no matter where I am, I frequently end up with slices of dried out (once) fresh mushrooms...ick!

It's true. Village Inn used to get their pizza shells there also. I don't know if they still do.
They make different types of shells, a lot of places order from them. They supply more than just their own pizza shop.
Years ago you could get a pizza "kit". I forget how many shells were in it, a big bag of grated cheese, and sauce. There was enough to make 10 or so pizzas, maybe more.
